Applaws Cat Food Review

According to their website, Applaws pet food is made with only natural ingredients because they believe that’s the very best way to nurture healthy cats and dogs.

Please note that although Applaws sells many cat food varieties, only their dry foods are nutritionally complete for cats. Their other products are complementary pet food products meant to be feed alongside another complete wet or dry cat food, and hence are not reviewed here.

Applaws Review Summary

Overall, with 4 varieties reviewed producing an average score of 6.5 / 10 paws, Applaws is an above average overall cat food brand when compared to all others brands in our database.

However, due to the nature of their ingredient composition dry foods typically score less than wet foods on average. Hence, it’s often helpful to break down the ratings into wet and dry food categories in order to get a more complete understanding of how the brand rates.

All of the Applaws products reviewed here are dry foods. When compared against other dry food manufacturer’s products, Applaws is a a significantly above average dry cat food brand.

Applaws can be found in the supermarkets which is great to see as it’s much better than other foods on the shelves. You should be able to find it in Coles and Woolworths. It’s grain free which is really nice to see – cats care not for grains.

There are two formulas on offer – Chicken and Ocean Fish with Salmon. Both have a similar composition but the Chicken formula can be bought in a larger bag size (3kg), so I’ll focus on that for this review.

First off we have chicken meal and turkey meal. Both are excellent lean meats high in protein, and this is exactly what should be in a cat food. We know the meat ingredients make up 50% of the food (it says so on the packaging).

Pea starch is a gluten-free, low GI source of fibre and prolonged energy as well as a hypo-allergenic protein source. We often find some kind of starch in pet foods as it works as a binder to hold the kibble together. Tapioca starch is found next, which if processed correctly is gluten and lectin free. It’s an ingredient of mixed opinion.

Dried Chicken as the 5th ingredient is good to see, another decent source of meat protein. The ingredients list is limited, but that’s not a bad thing as all the essentials are there – flaxseed and fish oil for much needed omega 3 & 6, rosemary extract as a natural preservative, fruits, veggies, super-foods alfalfa and kelp.

If you like the convenience of buying at the supermarket then this is a great choice. As an added bonus it’s made in Australia as well. I’ve rated it 4 stars as there are foods with greater meat content and less starch, but this is definitely better than most.
